Brian Fitzgerald tells stories. He’s been doing just that since he was a boy. Growing up on a cattle ranch in Arizona, he developed the ability to create an image through setting, detail, point of view, and an appreciation of his audience.
And at the time, his gift for storytelling helped him explain why chores went undone.
When Brian picked up a camera at Arizona State University, he realized its unsurpassed ability for telling stories and gaining entry into people’s lives. He was hooked, and graduated with degrees in photojournalism and Russian. While his first big project was at a Young Pioneer summer camp in the former Soviet Union, he went on to report from Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Russia, Kuwait and Iraq. From documenting soldiers in the Middle East to smuggling cameras into the depths of an Arctic coal mine, Brian’s resume is as impressive as it is extensive.
“Being a photojournalist shapes a lot of what I do now,” explains Brian. “My skills come from film-based cameras where everything has to be perfect the first time. It gives me a better grounding, a firmer knowledge of the technical stuff. I can work fast, but I can also roll with the punches.”
In addition to this international work, he has photographed around the country for the Seattle Times and in Arizona, Utah, and Washington. Brian has also worked locally at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram.
A staunch believer in the storytelling power of images, Brian’s portfolio reveals real moments and real people and conveys a strong sense of place, purpose, and mood. He uses his lens to draw the viewer into the images he captures. Not only does his photojournalistic background give him the ability to work effectively in a maelstrom of motion, but he also has the creativity and technical knowledge necessary to create an exquisitely lit and thoughtfully arranged conceptual image on location or in his studio.
“Lighting plays a huge role in any photograph. I can use natural, ambient light very well,” he says, “but I can also bring whatever light I need to blend natural light with artificial. “
Fitzgerald Photography is currently based in Portland, Maine, where Brian collaborates with many of the state’s top corporations and ad agencies. As a national award-winning photographer, Brian has earned the following accolades:
